Bayanzag
(Flaming Cliffs) is internationally
famous for its fossilized dinosaur remains.
Dinosaur eggs were found here as well as whole
fossilized skeletons. There are many places
in the Gobi desert -Hermen Tsav, Zulganai, Tugrugiin
Shiree and Naran Daats, which are famous for
their dinosaur remains and their unusual geological
formations. On this trip you will have the opportunity
to visit and explore these places.
The American Museum of Natural History and the
Mongolian Academy of Science Team stumbled into
this valley in 1993. At Ukhaa Tolgod,
we have an incredible richness of fossils. Roughly
200 mammal skulls come from this site alone.
That is an extraordinary number, and it exceeds
the number of specimens found from all localities
in the Gobi, over 70 years.
The
Khongoriin Els sand dunes extend along
the northern side of Sevrei and Zoolon mountains.
These dunes are 180 km long, 15-20 km wide and
up to 200m high. There is a small oasis near
Khongoriin gol stream, which flows along the
northern edge of the dunes. The scenery here
is simply spectacular.
Yoliin
Am (Vulture Gorge) is a narrow valley
located in the Zuun Saikhan Mountain of Gobi
Gurvan Saikhan mountain range, with thick pieces
of ice almost all year around hidden at its
bottoms. This area is home to rare animals such
as the Argali (wild sheep) and Ibex as well
as Vultures and other large prey birds. There
are impressive herds of gazelles and occasional
sightings of the rare Khulan (Asiatic wild ass)
grazing on the endless steppe.
Nomadic
Camel Herders - You will visit local
nomadic families, the friendliest and most hospitable
people that you would ever meet, to have a bowl
of camel yoghurt and taste camel milk. Then
meet camel breeders and ride two-humped Bactrian
camel and take photos of your camel experience
along the way.
It is a unique chance to experience the life
of the Gobi nomads, how they tend their livestock,
keep their camels, bring up their children and
make living in the coldest desert on earth.
